We Gather to Worship God

   Welcome & Announcements

   Prelude

*Call to Worship

God came to Moses in a burning bush, and led the Israelites through the wilderness.

God sat with Sarah in her grief, and found Jonah in the belly of a whale.

Jesus came to us as a baby in a manger, and broke the power of death on a cross.

Jesus called to his disciples at the Sea of Galilee, and fed thousands gathered on a hillside.

God meets us where we are.

Surely God will meet us here!

*Hymn #463 “How Firm a Foundation” Vs. 1, 2, 3

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,

Our brokenness so often gets the best of us.

You ask for our best, and we offer whatever energy and imagination is left at the end of the day.

You offer us grace, and we assume it is for people more deserving than we are.

You welcome us into your love, and we resist making room for others.

Forgive us.

Make use of what faith we have, and teach us to trust you.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God.

Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One,

Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

We Listen for the Word of God

Today we conclude our series “God’s House and Our Home.” God can be found anywhere. The fingerprints of God are evident in creation. The Spirit of God is sensed in other people. But there is something about us that benefits from having a particular place…a place set aside for the purpose of being with God. We call those places sanctuaries. In our “sanctuary” there is a communion table, pulpit, cross and baptismal font -- each of these have received our attention. Today we bring two final reflections. Nate will focus on the power of music to create space for the Holy. And John will wrap up the theme, as he reflects on the word “sanctuary.” True sanctuary does not separate us from discovering God elsewhere, but rather trains our eyes to notice the presence of God anywhere.

We Respond to God’s Love

Prayers of the People—The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to Aaron Renton or John Hilley.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Announcements

AN INVITATION TO SING! There is no better time than January to begin something new, challenging (in a good way), connecting (to other people, and to God), and life-giving – and nothing accomplishes this better than singing, especially in your church choir! Please join us Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for Choir practice. We meet here at the church. Everyone is welcome!

Ready to connect more deeply? Next Sunday, February 12th, from 9:00 - 9:45 am in the pastor’s study there will be an optional gathering about becoming a member of the church, where individuals can ask questions and join a discussion about our church and the larger Presbyterian church.

Volunteers Needed! Each week we need several members of our EBPC family to help deliver our worship services. Your assistance is needed in the following ways: opener/closer, liturgist, nursery assistant, acolyte (2nd-5th Grade) and Worship & Hospitality Team members to greet people, distribute the bulletins, collect the offering, etc. If you are willing and able to help during January, February and/or March, please go the Sign-up Genius link here and select the date and role(s) for which you would like to volunteer. (We can train you for any position very easily!) If you have any questions, please contact the Worship Planning Team Moderator Liz Beatty.

Calling All Crafty People! If you love to create beautiful crafts or pieces of needlework, the Worship Team could use your help! At 2017 Christmas this year, we would love to hang specially made ornaments representing the highlights of 2017 on our sanctuary tree. If you are interested in helping, please contact Liz Beatty.

To help our EBPC community know their neighbors better, Liz and Yarnell Beatty are hosting an evening of fun and fellowship at their house. Please join us on Saturday, February 11 from 6:30-9 p.m. for this fun event. All adults in the EBPC community are invited and asked to bring an appetizer and beverage to share for this casual get-together. Please let Liz know by emailing her at aybeatty@comcast.net.

Our preschool is hosting an Art Night and Fundraiser on Feb. 10th at 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. We hope you will join us for this fun and festive event to see new and old preschool friends!

Save the date: Sunday, February 19th for the
