We Gather to Worship God

   Thought before Worship

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness.” - Genesis 1:26

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude “God Bless the Child”

Holiday and Herzog, Jr.

*Call to Worship

God of the prophets, call to us today
Call us into Your ways of love, justice and righteousness.

God of the poets, remind us again how much You love us
Sing to us Your ways of love, justice and righteousness.

God of the disciples, teach us how to follow You
Teach us Your ways of love, justice and righteousness.

God of all creation, help us to know Your ways
All:       We gather to hear Your call,

            to sing Your praise,

            to teach each other,

to pray and worship as the Body of Christ.

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #352 “My Lord! What a Morning”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, in your gracious presence

we confess our sin and the sin of this world. Although Christ is among us as our peace,

we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the values of a broken world.

The profit and pleasures we pursue lay waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies that we harbor

set neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation.

We abuse your good gifts of imagination and freedom,

of intellect and reason, and have turned them into bonds of oppression.

Lord, have mercy upon us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to serve you in the world as agents of your reconciling love in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Response “What Does the Lord Require of You?” Hymn #70

Vs. 1 (2x’s)

Vs. 3 (2x’s)

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants In Today’s Service: pastor: John Hilley; musician: Nate Strasser, the choir, Laura Mayo; liturgist: Rob Montgomery.

To Our Members and Guests: Please sign our friendship pad.

Children’s Worship: Children’s worship helps children ages 3 through 2nd grade explore Bible units through hands-on, age appropriate, experiential activities that are designed to engage them while also instilling faith formation. We meet upstairs almost every Sunday following the Time with Children. Today’s story is You are my Beloved - Luke 3:21-22( Help children explore baptism as a beginning of their lives of faith.) Next week’s story is It's Tempting! - Luke 4:1-13   (Help children learn that we can put our trust in God even when we are tested.)

Upwards is a learning experience for 3rd through 5th graders that alternates weekly between meeting as a group and a clipboard activity. Growing in Grace and Gratitude is this year’s theme. This week they will be doing a clipboard activity. If you have any questions, ask Kelly McConnell at ebpcyouth@comcast.net.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to John Hilley or Dave Ford.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Announcements

Presbyterian Women will be meeting on Friday, February 12th at 9:30 am. This is a change from most months when they meet on the first Friday.

Calling All Musicians! Do you play the guitar, violin, or another musical instrument? If so, we are looking for you. We would love to incorporate more of our church members and guests into our worship music. If you play a instrument and are willing to share your talents with our congregation, please email our Music Director, Nate (ebpcmusic@comcast.net) so he can add you to our list.

New EBPC opportunity for middle and high school youth! EBPC, under the direction of our very talented music director, Nate, is putting together youth praise band and we need talent! If you are interested in joining this new group, please contact Nate (ebpcmusic@comcast.net) and let him what instrument you play and your availability for practice and Sunday mornings.

Let's Connect! In order for members and guests to get to know each other better, we encourage you to wear your name tag whenever you are at church. If you don't have one, please notify the church office or sign the sheet in the narthex, and one will be prepared for you. We will also be ordering some lanyards which you will be able to clip your name tag to, should you prefer using the lanyard instead.

The turkey and cranberries are all eaten and the shelves are almost empty in the College Grove Food Pantry. January is again our month to contribute to the Food Pantry. There is a special need for canned chicken and other meats, canned fruits, household cleaning products, and as always, cereals, canned vegetables, dessert mixes, and spices/seasonings, paper goods, such as bathroom tissue, paper towels, and facial tissue are good items also. Bins will be in the gathering place the first Sunday in January. If you are interested in helping to take our offerings to College Grove and distributing them on January 30, please contact Martha Wolfe at 615-373-5979 or bmwolfe50@aol.com.

The Mission and Service Committee is meeting today after worship. They would like to have some new members on the committee. If interested, please come to today’s meeting or contact Richard White at rwhite@fulham.com.

From time to time, medical emergencies arise during worship and other gatherings at EBPC. We are trying to identify individuals within the congregation that fit one of the following criteria and are willing to be called upon should the need present itself:

· Have professional medical training (ex: doctors, nurses, EMT’s, military medics);

· Have been certified in CPR, First Aid Training, and/or the Use of a Defibrillator; OR

· Are willing to complete a short CPR/First Aid class (at his/her expense) organized by EBPC and taught by the American Red Cross at a time and date TBD.

If so please complete the bulletin insert and return it to the church office by January 31st or email Liz Beatty at aybeatty@comcast.net.

Starting with this week we begin a 3 part sermon series called MeWe Creation Stories. It is inspired by Leonard Sweet’s book Me and We: God’s New Social Gospel. He begins his book: “for humans to be human, the chief developmental task of life is to find an identity. Fundamentally, that means a coming to terms with two simple words: Me and We. But simple isn’t so simple.” We live in a disconnected world of me versus we. It has been said that the first three principles of hell are: 1. “You are your own.” 2. “You are what you own.” 3. “You’re on your own.”
