*Call to Worship

Come to me, Jesus said.

“Come to me all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Follow me, Jesus said.

“Deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow me. Those who lose their life for my sake, will find it.”

Trust in me, Jesus said.

“To trust in me is to trust in God, so do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #667 “When Morning Gilds the Skies”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,

When we see clearly the path we should follow, yet still choose our own way, forgive us.

When we recognize you in the suffering of others, yet still turn our backs, forgive us.

When our loved ones need words of encouragement, yet we speak with anger, forgive us.

When we want you to heal us and make us new, but doubt that you can or will, forgive us.

We often fail to be true to who we are,

O God, so we have no right to ask this, but we ask you to be true to who you are, and forgive us once again.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God.

Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One,

Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

We Listen for the Word of God

Prayer for Illumination

Psalter Psalm 15 Tune: Winchester New

Lord, who may in Your temple dwell,

Upon Your holy hill abide?

Those who show love instead of hate,

Humility in place of pride

A blameless life help me to live,

Free from contempt and selfish will;

When I through mortal frailness fail,

God deigns by grace to love me still.

New Testament Philippians 2:1-11; 4:4-7 NT page 197

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Sermon “God’s House & Our Home” John R. Hilley

“Beneath the Cross”

Time of Reflection

Prayers of the People—The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Respond to God’s Love

*Litany Vander Wal

Across the barriers that divide race from race:

Reconcile us, O Christ, by your cross.

Across the barriers that divide rich from poor:

Reconcile us, O Christ, by your cross.

Across the barriers that divide people of different cultures:

Reconcile us, O Christ, by your cross.

Across the barriers that divide Christians:

Reconcile us, O Christ, by your cross.

Across the barriers that divide men and women, young and old:

Reconcile us, O Christ, by your cross.

Confront us, O Christ, with the hidden prejudices and fears that deny and betray our prayers.

Enable us to see the causes of strife, remove from us all senses of superiority.

Teach us to grow in unity with all God's children.

To the honor of your name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Offering

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Worship Theme: "The House of God and Our Home": God is not tied to any particular place. It is true that God can be worshipped anywhere. But we have learned that it is important to have a place, a holy place where we worship. We, at EBPC, have a room that on one hand is like any room; and on another hand is like no other room. Join us in January as we consider what makes this space a place for community, even a holy space. With our focus upon the importance of our community life together and with our engagement of Street Dixon Rick Architects to help us consider a master plan for our church and grounds, this is a timely series. (Past sermons are on the web.)

January 8th: “Holy Furniture: The Font”

January 15th: "Open Table: A Reservation at the Table"

January 22nd: “Use Your Words”

January 29th: “Beneath the Cross”

February 5th: “Sanctuary”

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to Aaron Renton or John Hilley.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Announcements

AN INVITATION TO SING! There is no better time than January to begin something new, challenging (in a good way), connecting (to other people, and to God), and life-giving – and nothing accomplishes this better than singing, especially in your church choir! Please join us Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for Choir practice. We meet here at the church. Everyone is welcome!

Ready to connect more deeply? Sunday, February 5th, from 9:00 - 9:45 am in the pastor’s study there will be an optional gathering about becoming a member of the church, where individuals can ask questions and join a discussion about our church and the larger Presbyterian church.

Volunteers Needed! Each week we need several members of our EBPC family to help deliver our worship services. Your assistance is needed in the following ways: opener/closer, liturgist, nursery assistant, acolyte (2nd-5th Grade) and Worship & Hospitality Team members to greet people, distribute the bulletins, collect the offering, etc. If you are willing and able to help during January, February and/or March, please go the Sign-up Genius link here and select the date and role(s) for which you would like to volunteer. (We can train you for any position very easily!) If you have any questions, please contact the Worship Planning Team Moderator Liz Beatty.

Calling All Crafty People! If you love to create beautiful crafts or pieces of needlework, the Worship Team could use your help! At 2017 Christmas this year, we would love to hang specially made ornaments representing the highlights of 2017 on our sanctuary tree. If you are interested in helping, please contact Liz Beatty.
