We Gather to Worship God

   Welcome & Announcements

  Passing of the Peace

The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

Prelude “Testify” Needtobreathe

Lenten Reflection

Lord, like Nicodemus, we often are afraid to reveal our uncertainty or disbelief.

We often pretend to have all of the answers even though we are trembling inside with trepidation.

May we come to you as imperfect selves, ready to feel the Spirit once again in our lives.

May we continue to ask questions and seek answers from you Lord.

May we be prepared to respond with new conviction and in new ways that we never could have imagined.

“Will You Come and Follow Me” Hymn #726, Vs. 2

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #634 “To God Be the Glory”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, we come before you

In need of forgiveness and grace.

You call us to trust in you completely,

but we do not.

We are timid and fearful as we follow your lead.

We justify our actions and words,

though we know they are not what you require.

We struggle to understand the new life Christ offers,

Preferring old habits to risky change.

Forgive us, we pray.

Help us to be born again into the life of Christ,

trusting that you have included us by your grace

in the family of faith.

In Christ’s name we pray.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God.

Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One,

Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants in Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Music Director: Nate Strasser; Musicians: the youth band, the choir; Liturgist: Liz Beatty; Lenten Reflection Readers: Mary Ann and Susan Schellhardt; Celebrant: Mike Magee.

This morning, communion is served by intinction. The congregation will come forward to receive the bread, which they will then dip into the chalice of grape juice. Worshippers will return to their pews by the side aisles. If you need a gluten free wafer, please tell the server. The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is not just for Presbyterians or “members of the church.” All who confess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Even one who doubts or whose trust is wavering may receive the bread and grape juice (in place of wine) in order to be assured of God’s love and grace in Jesus Christ.

Please sign our friendship pad.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to Aaron Renton or John Hilley.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Announcements

As you know, from November through March, when the weather is a special issue for homeless people in our area, we host eight men in our building one night a month through our Mission and Service outreach for Room In The Inn. We serve them supper and breakfast, provide them a warm place to stay, and minister to other needs. This month EBPC will host Room in the Inn this Tuesday evening, March 14th, and we are in need of some volunteers! We currently need two innkeepers and extra help with clean-up. And of course, we always welcome other volunteers who would like to help serve meals, stay the night, be a friend. Please let Ann Ketch know if you can help at ketchann2@gmail.com or (615) 440-6124.

On Sunday, February 26th, we experimented with a new orientation of the sanctuary so that we can begin making decisions about more permanent changes. We will leave it this way for the next few weeks and then switch it to an orientation towards the garden window for a few weeks. Your feedback about your impressions of each arrangement is appreciated, both the things you like about each configuration and what you would change. You may either fill out a form that is located in the sanctuary and return it to the wooden box, email your thoughts to Liz Beatty at aybeatty@comcast.net or let her know in person. Thank you for your assistance!

Music in the Grove Sponsorship? As an attempt to offset some of the costs for our upcoming September 4th Music in the Grove Concert, we are trying to develop a group of financial sponsors for the event. In exchange for a monetary contribution, the company would be able to display their logo on marketing and communication pieces in the media and on signs, t-shirts, flyers, etc. If you have a company that would like to participate or if you would like to work with Liz Beatty's team to court sponsorship from businesses in our community, please contact her at aybeatty@comcast.net.

LUKE 14:12 is an organization that provides meals to those who are homeless in downtown Nashville. EBPC serves lunch for Luke 14:12 on the third Tuesday of every month. We meet at 11:30 in the dining room of the Room In The Inn campus (705 Drexel St., off 8th Ave.) and are finished up by 1:00. Transportation from the church is available. We leave at 11:00 a.m. We are in need of a few new friends to add to our volunteer list. If you are interested, we would love to have you join us! Our next opportunity to serve is Tuesday, March 21st. For more information about participating in Luke 14:12 with EBPC or to be added to the volunteer list, contact Ann Ketch at ketchann2@gmail.com or (615) 440-6124.
