The congregation is asked to use the time of the pre-service

music as a period of silent prayer and preparation.

Thought before Worship             Saint Francis of Assisi Prayer

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,

that where there is hatred, I may bring love,

that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness,

that where there is discord, I may bring harmony,

that where there is error, I may bring truth,

that where there is doubt, I may bring faith,

that where there is despair, I may bring hope,

that where there are shadows, I may bring light,

that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather

to comfort than to be comforted

to understand, than to be understood,

to love, than to be loved.

For it is by self forgetting that one finds.

It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.

It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

We Gather to Worship God

Welcome & Announcements

Minute for Mission - College Grove Food Ministry

Prelude “You Are My All in All” arr. Strasser

*Call to Worship

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

We have come into this place in the hope that a power greater than ourselves can restore our world from what seems like craziness.

Therefore, we will not fear though the earth should change,

though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.  God is in the midst of it, it shall not be moved.

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #796 “We Come to You for Healing, Lord”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

God, we confess our lack of power.

We sometimes feel helpless, alone and weak.

We realize that we know only a little, and each time we try to do everything on our own, we fail.

We need your power.

We want to rely on you daily to guide us to do the things that are necessary for our life.

We want your power to be ours, so that we can stand strong in your world.

We need to be reassured that death to our old ways need not be feared and that true life is found in You.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God. Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One, Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants In Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Music Director: Nate Strasser; Musicians: the choir; Liturgist: Paul Rein; EBPC Players: Ric Brown, Yarnell Beatty, Liz Beatty.

"Voices" is an original mini-drama that delves into the subject of addiction. Anyone who is afflicted with substance abuse issues struggles with a lifelong battle between the voices of the outside world and his or her internal "committee" of voices that filter those external voices to its own end.

Our current teaching series: “Empire Recovery: What Do You Need to Recover From?” During the month of October and early November, we are focusing upon pretty challenging conversations about various bad habits that we need to change or, worse, addictions that have a grip on us or on loved ones: anything from substance abuse from alcohol to drugs, to work addictions, or to how we use and misuse food. Next Sunday, the Rev. Mark DeVries is our guest preacher and he will be speaking on the support our children and youth need in navigating life today.

Please join us immediately following today’s service for a brief Congregational Meeting.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to Dave Ford or John Hilley.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Called Congregational Meeting

TODAY

The Session has called what will be a brief Congregational Meeting immediately following the worship service to address two items of business:

1. The Elder Nominating Committee, which is charged with recommending active members to take on the role of Elder, will require a replacement for former member, Jeanie White, who has relocated out of state.

2. A recommendation from the Session to change the length of terms of elder service from three (3) years to two (2) years and to change the number of active elders in service.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Praise and Prayers

Prayers of healing for Harvey Renken who is suffering from cardiac issues. (He is the newborn son of Brad and Catherine Cavazos Renken, former EBPC Associate Pastor.)

Praise God for the opportunity of five representatives from EBPC to attend the PC(USA)’s thought-proving conference on racism at Montreat this past week.

Prayers for Joanna Roberts who is in Morningside’s Assisted Living as she recovers from surgery this week.

Prayers for residents of Haiti and for those along U.S.’s East Coast affected by Hurricane Matthew. Pray that through the response of the faith community, survivors and those offering assistance will be reminded of the hope that is found in Christ.

Prayers for those facing addictions, either their own or those of family members and loved ones.

We join in prayer with the Presbytery of Charlotte:

Grant, O God,
that your holy and life-giving Spirit

may so move every human heart,
that the barriers which divide us may crumble,
suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease,
and that, with our divisions healed,
we might live in justice and peace;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for Marisa Miller and her family with the losses and health challenges they have had.

Prayers of healing and strength for Kelly McConnell’s mother and prayers of support for Kelly and her family.

Prayers for the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian’s Zambia Synod and for mission coworkers Charles and Melissa Johnson who are working in Lusaka.

Prayers for Brent Byers.
