We Gather to Worship God

Prelude          “Make Me a Blessing”        Arr. McDonald

*A Call to Worship         (inspired by Psalm 146)

Happy are those whose hope is in God,

maker of heaven and earth--

for God keeps faith forever!

God executes justice for the oppressed

and gives food for the hungry.

God sets the prisoners free

and opens the eyes of the blind.

God lifts up those who are bowed down.

God watches over the strangers

and upholds the orphan and the widow.

People of God, sing praise to the One who is your help—

for God keeps faith forever!

*Hymn #367 “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Almighty and compassionate God,

every day, in our desire to

attain our wants,

avoid discomfort,

and shun those we do not know or love,

we show ourselves to be unworthy of your gifts of life.

Of this we are sorely aware,

and we ask your power to renew us in body and spirit,

that we will be able, through your help,

to walk in the way you intend for us.

Forgive us and lead us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Time of Reflection

Response “Spirit of the Living God” Hymn #288

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Assurance of Forgiveness

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 RSV)

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

About Today’s Service

Participants In Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Liturgist: Ralph Comer; Musicians: Laura Rosser Kreiselmaier.

This morning we celebrate the Sacrament of Communion. The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all persons of faith present, remembering that being invited to the Table is not extended to us because of merit, but a grace extended to all. There may be those in attendance today who have not been baptized, but who feel moved to receive the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper and Baptism are inseparable. If you feel called by the Holy Spirit to meet Christ in Communion, we believe that you are also being called to Baptism. We will not turn anyone away from the Lord’s Table, but we do invite you to speak to the pastor or a member of the session about Baptism as soon as possible.

Today’s Communion is served by intinction. The congregation will come forward to receive the bread, which they will then dip into the chalice of grape juice. Worshipers will return to their pews by the side aisles. If you need a gluten free wafer, please tell the server.

To Our Members and Guests: Please sign our friendship pad.

Children’s Worship: Children’s worship helps children ages 3 through 2nd grade explore Bible units through hands on, age appropriate, experiential activities that are designed to engage them while also instilling faith formation. We meet upstairs every Sunday following the Time with Children. If this is your child’s first visit, please let us know if there are any food allergies as a snack is served. Today's story is about Creation, “God Saw How Good It Was.” (Genesis 1:1-2:3 ) Next Week the children will learn about Abraham, “God Makes a Promise.” (Genesis 12:1-9; 15:2-6)

Upwards is a learning experience for 3rd through 5th graders that alternates weekly between meeting as a group and a clipboard activity. Growing in Grace and Gratitude is this year’s theme. This week will be a clipboard activity in the sanctuary.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

By mid-October we will have a list of items to be brought so that we can again provide complete supplies for a Thanksgiving dinner for 45 families. These will be delivered to the Food Pantry the week before Thanksgiving. More on this in October.
